Background of the Study

Breastfeeding is widely recognized as one of the most critical factors for ensuring the health and survival of infants. Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life has been shown to prevent infections, reduce infant mortality, and promote optimal growth and development. In Sokoto State, where breastfeeding practices may be influenced by cultural beliefs, limited access to maternal healthcare, and lack of knowledge, breastfeeding support programs have been introduced to encourage exclusive breastfeeding and improve maternal and child health. These programs aim to address challenges such as inadequate breastfeeding knowledge and socio-cultural barriers. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of breastfeeding support programs in Sokoto State in improving breastfeeding practices and child health.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, many mothers in Sokoto State face barriers to practicing it, including lack of awareness, misinformation, and cultural practices that discourage breastfeeding. Breastfeeding support programs are essential to address these challenges, but their effectiveness in changing behavior and improving maternal and child health remains inadequately explored. This study seeks to assess the impact of breastfeeding support programs on breastfeeding rates and child health outcomes in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of breastfeeding support programs in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these programs on the duration and exclusivity of breastfeeding practices.
  3. To identify the barriers and challenges faced by mothers in adopting recommended breastfeeding practices.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are breastfeeding support programs in promoting exclusive breastfeeding in Sokoto State?
  2. What is the impact of breastfeeding support programs on infant health outcomes in Sokoto State?
  3. What barriers do mothers face in adopting exclusive breastfeeding practices, despite the support programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Breastfeeding support programs significantly increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding among mothers in Sokoto State.
  2. Exclusive breastfeeding, promoted through support programs, leads to better health outcomes for infants in Sokoto State.
  3. Cultural beliefs and inadequate healthcare services are significant barriers to the successful adoption of breastfeeding practices in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on mothers who have participated in breastfeeding support programs in Sokoto State. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing remote rural areas, recall bias in self-reported data, and possible variations in program implementation across communities.

Definitions of Terms
